The tower was added to the Palace of Westminster as part of a reconstruction that was done. The tower was completed in 1856 after thirteen years it took to build it. The original bell, Big Ben, after a short period of use cracked and had to be replaced, putting in use the new bell in 1859. But things began not quite right for the second Big Ben, like the previous two months of use also cracked. This time he was given a quarter turn and replaced the hammer blows for the lighter one. The drug worked and that is the Big Ben today. And the mechanism of clocks has cost only pennies to keep you all these years, the entire counterweight cents is that the pendulum is required to maintain accuracy.
